Tracking the Eye of the Storm

                                Tropical Storm Fay

                                August 14-15 2008

Tropical Storm Fay developed on 8/15/08 in quiet an interesting location!!!. Of all places tropical storm fay developed over Santo Domingo, Dominican Repblic, despite the fact that this is a mountaines area, and that the terrain isn't very supportive for tropical systems. I am skeptical about this though, as the SAT Data and RADAR Data both from the area, showed that the LLC associated with the system was located just offshore of the Dominican Repbulic. Despite the strange location that this system had already thrown into play this wouldn't be the only trick up it's sleve, as it would move back into the Caribbean and make it's second landfall 41 miles (WSW) of Cienfuegos, Cuba. After moving back off Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico this system made a more (N/NE) turn toward Southern Florida where it made it's third official landfall in Key West, with winds around 60 mph, though the system did bring heavy rains and severe weather to the Florida keys, it still wasn't through as it moved back over open waters where it actually disipated some, before making it's forth landfall 53 miles (SE) of Fort Myers, Fl where it would dump heavy rain and cause severe weather across the region. Fay continued across Central Florida, but to suprise only got stronger and better organized over land, where it reach its high strength around 1:00PM on 8/19 , 111 miles (SE) of Tampa, Fl. Maximum sustained winds where around 65 mph and the Minimum Pressure was 986mb. Fay continued to move toward the (NE/NNE) before moving back off the (E) coast of Florida and into the Atlantic, where it would shift directions once again, throwing forecasters off track with the system. At 2:00PM, Fay made it's fifth landfall 64 miles (NE) of Orlando, FL, with winds remaining around 60mph. As this system continued to impact florida it dumped several inches of rainfall across the state with some local's picking up nearly 30" inches, which in return lead to major flooding in many locations. Fay finally moved off the (W) coast of Florida, yet again before making it's sixth and final landfall in the Florida Panhandle or 18 miles (NNE) of Apalachicola, Florida. Once making landfall in the Florida Panhandle it, begun to weaken where it would finally dissipate (NNE) of Mobile, Alabama on 8/23/08. But not after causing flooding in many places across the Southeast along with severe weather.Thirty-six deaths have been blamed on Fay.Damage is estimated at over $180 million. You can view Fay's tropical cyclone report from the NHC here.
